I often come across interesting memorabilia online about the Genetti family. Usually it’s advertising items such as matchbooks or postcards produced for the family businesses. But recently I found this little magazine called “Meat Merchandising: The Business Paper of the Retail Meat Industry” dated June 1936, on eBay for a few dollars. Within it’s pages was a very personable interview with Stanley Genetti (1899-1988). At the time, Stanley, was one of four brothers managing the family grocery chain. In 1936, older brother, Gus (1892-1976), was president of the company.
The interview offers a founding history and account of current operations for the growing business; describing various departments, products and a look at future plans. Stanley also offers glowing praise for his brother Gus, who he describes as the innovative force behind their chain of eighteen stores. With interest it should be noted, Gus Genetti soon leaves the firm around 1938 due to an argument between the brothers, and Stanley takes over the reigns as president. Gus goes on to establish a successful furrier business, hotel and restaurant in Hazleton. But the feud between the brothers is never resolved.
The interview is a slice of family history enshrined in an obscure magazine offered for a few dollars on eBay! The 1936 date is significant as major changes take place within the business and personally to family relations after this date.
